The United Party for National Development (UPND) says there is a scheme being orchestrated by some selfish individuals to remove ZESCO Managing Director Victor Mapani from his position.
UPND National Chairperson Labour and Social Security Godfrey Beene says the party is aware of the vicious social media sponsored campaign targeted at Mr Mapani by those who allegedly benefited from the corruption at ZESCO under the previous Administration.
Speaking during a Media briefing in Lusaka, Mr Beene added that the maneuvers to remove the current ZESCO MD is intended to destabilize ZESCO operations.
He said Mr Mapani is a victim of a malicious campaign aimed at denting his professional integrity.
Mr Beene charged that ZESCO under the leadership of Mr Mapani has managed to close loopholes used for corruption activities in the procurement of goods and services.
He said the introduction of transparency in contract allocation in the procurement system has eliminated the widespread corruption and enhanced efficiency in the delivery of goods and services by the suppliers.
Mr Beene explained that ZESCO has established a committee comprising representatives from all relevant departments so as to ensure no individual has the authority to unilaterally award contracts.
Mr Beene said the scheme to remove Mr Mapani who has demonstrated a high level of competence will greatly renege the transformative agenda of turning around the operations of the power utility company.
Meanwhile, UPND Deputy Media Director Cheelo Katambo called on the Zambia Police to deal decisively with cadres exhibiting unruly behaviour.
Mr Katambo said the Police should not look at the colour of the party regalia wearing the unruly cadres but to act decisively.
Most of what comes from UPND circles is childish. How can people that are no longer in charge orchestrate the removal of Mapani? If they don’t what Mapani at Zesco let them just fire him and appoint someone who’s going to be user friendly. Deal with your own shortcomings as the gimmick of always blaming the past regime won’t work. Arrest those that kidnapped Jay Jay Banda pronto!
Who created the scheme to remove Reynolds Bowa at ERB? What wrong did Bowa do? A very professional man was removed unceremoniously accused of increasing electricity tarrifs. Was it his personal descision or was it ERB board secision of govt decision? . If Bowa indeed was wrong in announcing ZESCO increased tarrifs why has the govt not reversed the tarriffs. Lets be serious. If Bowa was fired for no reason of incompetence, then Mapani ( ZESCO MD), Kapala( Minister of Energy) and Peter( Energy Permanent secretary) MUST ALL be fired immediately.
ZESCO tarrifs should also be reduced to old rates.

We have discussed over and over the same issues you are raising now. Our fellow African countries were facing starvation and we had to help them out. Should we have just watched them starve while we keep Maize stocks?
No one ever thought that there was going to be a drought in the first place. There are some of the natural phenomena we as human beings have no control over. If Kariba did not fill up, make suggestions to fill it up so that power generation continues. Remember it was pf who decided to replace the generators which needed more water to produce the same amount of power. Do you now blame load shading on power exports?
Let us move and prepare for the next farming season, hoping that El Nino is over.

In any sane society we need to know what this MD’s promised performance indicators are before we can crucify him. Having said that, there has hardly been any direction in our energy sector aside from pumping out power to mines while subsidizing and giving tax holidays while at the same time complaining that domestic tariffs are too low. Of course they can be low if we allow the heavy lifters to pay their fair share. Ubupuba bweka-bweka as my Bemba friends would say.
MD Mapani reports to a Board…it cannot now be the duty of Beene to come out guns blazing trying to fish out the smoking gun. What is known is that in this time of crisis the MD is on leave and the Board has been meeting to try and find the cheapest and most prudent source for power they have even met on weekends sometimes and as the Chair confirmed he had breakfast with MD to share Board progress. Let us wait and see…am sure there are many other jobs he can do if found wanting at ZESCO.
Awe there is no scheme. We are tired of these MD’s lying between their teeth. When he promised to end load shedding, that was a contract between him and the consumers. He has breached that contract and we don’t care how so he needs to go. Let someone else who is competent take over and end this misery. We need proactive thinkers not reactions.

These management politics schemes can be dirty and dangerous. Most likely There is someone eyeing mapani’s position with a view to come and loot through dubious contracts. It happened to Rabson Mwansa at ZESCO and Dan Kalale at Electoral Commision of Zambia. It happened to Edify Hamukale when Lungu was using Kebby Mbewe, Bowman Lusambo, Hibeene Mwiinga, Freedom Sikazwe and party structures when they discovered Hamukale could not cut bribes through contracts for senior party officials. it is happening to RDA director right with crooks forcing their way into road contracts even some ministers like Kabuswe, Elvis Nkandu, Nkombo, Haimbe, matambo, mutolo disguising
