Government has assured Kabwe residents that it is making joint efforts with the Chinese government to re-open the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles joint venture (ZCMT) which was closed due to under-capitalisation.
Mr Kunda said on March 27 at a public rally that the construction of schools, health centres and other infrastructure and the implementation of other economic policies is intended to make Zambia a better country.
“The future of this country (Zambia) is assured under the leadership of President Banda and this is why he should be re-elected this year,” Mr Kunda said.
Mr Kunda said the economy of Zambia is being well managed and this has led to the country producing more food. He said a lot of farmers are now fully participating in the management of the economy through agriculture.
He also said “Government has this year put K1.3 trillion in the pockets of farmers who have sold their maize to the Food Reserve Agency”.
The Vice-President said the ruling party attaches importance to education and that is why it has allocated K57 billion to transform Nkrumah College of Education into a university and provided K60 billion for the development of Mulungushi University into the country’s third public university.[pullquote]Government has this year put K1.3 trillion in the pockets of farmers who have sold their maize to the Food Reserve Agency[/pullquote]
On the possible re-opening of the ZCMT which was closed in 2008, Mr Kunda said every effort was being made to re-open the textile plant.
Mr Kunda said ZCMT will soon be re-opened because Government is aware that the company employed many people in Kabwe.
“We have engaged the Chinese government through the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Commerce to provide funds,” he said.
He said the equipment at the closed textile company needs to be overhauled before the company can start operating.

You say farmers received 1.3 trillion but only less than 800million reached farmers because they were selling to FRA at losses. Where did the remaining 500million Gov’t released go to??? Kunda is claiming that GRZ put 1.3 Trillion in farmers pockets thru FRA and there is enough food for every Jim and Jack. That is day dreaming. On reopening of China Mulungushi Textile reopening since it was closed in 2008. What has GRZ/MOD been doing all along yet GK is making it a political just coz he wants to solicit for votes for RB and MMD. Pipo must wake up and sort out the MMD coz during the 20years of their misrule alot of pipo lost jobs, companies closed and others have died without getting their retrenchment/ retirement packages. This country is being pulled backwards by politicians. There is too much politiking at the expense of real development. This is nothing but an election campaign move. To begin with Mulungushi textile is not viable with current trading conditions. Govt needs to control the influx of cheap fabrics first before venturing into wasting tax payers money into this project. Without Govt interfernce, mulungushi textiles will just be another trading company where imported fabrics from China will be sold and no meaningful employement will be created. just a few packers and cleaners then the rest will be chinese .

There is serious corruption at FRA even for transporters getting there payment. They have to bribe some guys..They will always cut of 10% per bag from transporters. Shame indeed someone must do something about corruption…it stinks big time at FRA.
